HON for Africa
HON for Africa is based on collaboration between the South African Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Health On the Net Foundation (HON) in Geneva.
The Health On the Net Foundation in Geneva developed ethical standards (HONCode) guiding consumers on the World Wide Web to certified Web sites providing reliable health and medical information.
The MRC's role in this collaboration consists of:
- Reviewing and certification of Web sites in English-speaking African countries based on the HONCode
- Providing an information e-Guide for consumers seeking health and medical information on the World Wide Web
- Managing an e-Learning programme for Web developers based on the HONCode of Conduct. Registration to the e-learning programme is free to female Web developers from African countries in support of the Millennium Development Goal to eradicate poverty through the economic development of women. Successful completion of this e-Learning programme includes certification.
